SSHRC Doctoral Scholarships

Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships Program Doctoral Scholarships, and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships


The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctoral Fellowships and Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) Doctoral Scholarships aim to develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of scholarly achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities.

Applicants apply for both awards by completing one application form.  


  •   Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Doctoral Scholarships: $35,000 a year for three years (for study in Canada)
  •   SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships: $20,000 a year for one to four years (for study in Canada or abroad)


Three nominations


To be considered eligible for support, as of the application deadline date, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Be applying for support to pursue the first PhD (or equivalent).
  • Be pursuing doctoral studies in the social sciences or humanities.
  • Not have already received a scholarship or fellowship from SSHRC, NSERC or CIHR to undertake or complete a doctoral degree or combined MA/PhD.
  • Not be applying in the same academic year to NSERC or CIHR.
  • Obtained a grade of A-minus (3.70/4.30) average or greater in each of the last two completed years of study.
  • To be eligible to apply through UOIT, an applicant must be a full-time registered student.
  • If you are not registered at UOIT in the Fall 2016 term but intend to undertake doctoral studies, you must submit your SSHRC Doctoral Award application directly to SSHRC by Friday, November 4, 2016.

Internal deadline:

Tuesday, November 15, 2016 by 4 p.m.

Next steps:

All application files are accepted, reviewed and processed by the Office of Graduate Studies before submission to SSHRC.

A University Selection Committee is established, consisting of core faculty members that have not prepared a letter of reference for the applicant. This committee will review and rank all application files.

UOIT has been given a quota of applications that can be submitted to SSHRC.

The results of the competition are released in Spring 2017.
