Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships


The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting those who demonstrate both leadership skills and a high standard of scholarly achievement in graduate studies in the social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering and health sciences.Students wishing to apply for a Vanier CGS must do so through the Canadian university to which they are pursuing doctoral studies.


$50,000 per year for up to three years.


Submission of one nominee to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) 2016-2017 scholarship year.


Both Canadian and international students are eligible to apply. Applicants must also meet the following requirements (as per the Vanier CGS website):

  • Be nominated by only one Canadian university, which must have received a Vanier CGS allocation.
  • Be seeking financial support to pursue your first doctoral degree (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD). Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding.
  • Intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD) studies and research at the nominating university. Note that only the PhD portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding.
  • Have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2017 (see Calculating Months of Doctoral Studies on the Vanier CGS website).
  • Have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your university, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Applicants are encouraged to contact the university for its definition of a first-class average.
  • Must not have already received a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), NSERC or the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.

Wednesday, September 21, 2016. This is the internal deadline for all candidates to submit their application packages.

Nomination process:

Interested students must complete and submit their electronic application package through the ResearchNet application and nomination e-approval system by the internal deadline stated above.

It is also required on this date that students submit a complete hard copy of the application (including transcripts) to the Office of Graduate Studies, Campus Corners, Suite 1400.

Once the applications have been verified, there is an internal candidate selection process. Internal review committees will select the nominations to go forward to NSERC.


  • Wednesday, September 21, 2016: application deadline.

  • September/October 2016: internal review by Faculty Selection Committee and University Selection Committee.

  • Wednesday, November 2, 2016: deadline for universities to submit nominee.

  • Friday, March 31, 2017: results released.
